How it all started
I grew up in the automotive industry. My family owned an auto repair shop, so from an early age I was around vehicles, mechanics, repair estimates and customers trying to decide what to do with a car that had let them down.
The shop also ran a tow truck. When a vehicle came in that was not worth repairing, I would haul it to an automotive recycler. Every one of those trips was different. The vehicle condition was different, the customer's situation was different, and the access at the pickup location was different. I realised that helping people through the final stage of owning a vehicle — answering their questions, sorting the paperwork, removing the car cleanly — was the part of the business I enjoyed most.
That became the foundation of Jay's Junk Car Towing Inc.. In 2003 I started the business around straightforward vehicle removal and honest advice, and more than twenty years later that is still how it operates in Vancouver.

What twenty years of Vancouver pickups actually means
Saying “since 2003” only matters if you know what those years contain. Over that time I have removed thousands of vehicles across Vancouver, in almost every condition and almost every kind of space the city has.
I have handled engine failures where the vehicle stopped running on the spot, and transmission failures where the car will select a gear but will not hold it. I have removed estate vehicles for families settling affairs, and cars that had not moved in years with flat tires, seized brakes and no keys. I have picked up accident-damaged vehicles that no longer roll or steer normally, and loaded them carefully so nothing else gets damaged.
The access has been just as varied. Apartment and condo buildings with loading bays, fobs and strict time windows. Underground parkades where clearance height decides the whole approach. Street parking on busy arterials, permit blocks and bike-lane frontages. Tight back lanes with hydro poles, dumpsters and neighbours who also need to get through.
Every job is different. A stall on level three of a Downtown parkade, a car in a Mount Pleasant lane and a driveway in Dunbar are three separate problems even if the vehicle is identical. That is why I ask detailed questions on the phone: the questions come from jobs where I learned what happens when nobody asks them. Two decades in, pickups still teach me something.
Why customers trust the advice
Working in my family's repair shop taught me more than how vehicles come apart. It taught me how to read an estimate, what a repair really costs, which failures are terminal and which are ordinary maintenance on an older car.
That experience still helps customers today. If you read me a quote from your mechanic and I think the vehicle is worth keeping — the body is sound, the repair is reasonable against what the car is worth running, the rest of it has life left — I will tell you so, even though it costs me the pickup.
“Helping someone make the right decision matters more to me than winning every job.”
Not every old car belongs at the recycler. Some of them should be repaired and driven for another five years, and I would rather be the person who said that than the person who took the car.
If you are weighing it up, read should I repair my old car or scrap it before you decide.
Professional service, start to finish
Jay's Junk Car Towing Inc. is a professional owner-operated business. Having one experienced person manage the quote, scheduling, paperwork and pickup is not about limiting the business — it is about making the experience smoother for the customer. When the same person answers the phone, visits the vehicle and loads it, nothing gets lost between departments.
- I answer the phone and ask the questions that decide the job.
- I give you the quote and explain what it depends on.
- I schedule the pickup around your building, strata or parking situation.
- I arrive at the vehicle and verify it.
- I complete the paperwork properly.
- I pay you before the vehicle is loaded.
- I load and remove it, and it goes to an automotive recycler.
There is one thread of communication from the first call to the empty parking space, and that is the reason the details you tell me still apply when the truck arrives.
Ruby
Ruby is my dachshund. She has been riding along in the tow truck for years and has become a familiar part of the daily routine.
Customers often notice her relaxing in the passenger seat while I work, and returning customers regularly ask how she is doing. She normally stays comfortably in the truck while I complete the pickup.
