This is the single most useful thing you can do before a downtown pickup. I need to know whether the vehicle is at street level, inside a building, at a repair facility, or in a space with a posted height restriction.

From there the questions are practical: what the height limit is, how far the vehicle is from a point a truck can reach, whether it rolls, whether it steers, whether the brakes are locked, whether the tires hold air, and whether the keys exist. Once I have that, I can tell you honestly whether it is a job we can do safely and practically, and if it is not, I will say so rather than send a truck.

Street level in the West End and downtown

If the car is street level, the question is space and timing. Busy routes such as Davie, Robson, Burrard, Granville and Pacific Boulevard need a different plan from a quiet residential block, because the loading window is short and the truck cannot simply sit there.

Tell me which street the vehicle is on, which side it is on, how tightly it is parked between other vehicles and whether there is a bike lane or a construction hoarding at the curb. That is what decides whether it can be loaded safely.

Buildings, loading bays and notice

Most downtown and West End buildings want notice before a truck uses a loading bay or sits in the lane, and many have restricted hours for it.

Ask your building manager what they require and what time windows are allowed, then tell me. Booking a pickup for a window the building does not permit wastes your afternoon as well as mine.
