Lanes decide most East Vancouver pickups

Behind most East Vancouver houses there is a lane, and the lane is often the easier approach. It is also where the surprises are. Carports that overhang, fences built out to the property line, garbage and recycling bins on collection day, and neighbours' vehicles parked tight to the garage all reduce the room a flatbed needs to tilt its deck and winch a car on.

Before the truck leaves, tell me whether the vehicle is in the lane, in a garage, in a side yard or in the driveway, and whether anything is parked in front of it or behind it. If a neighbour needs to move a car for twenty minutes, it is much easier to arrange that in advance than to discover it on the day.

Cars that have been sitting for years

A vehicle that has been in the same spot for several winters usually has flat tires, seized brakes and, fairly often, no keys. None of that stops a removal, but all of it changes the equipment.

It also changes what is under the car. Vehicles that have sunk into gravel, grass or soft ground need to be lifted or skated out rather than dragged, and I would rather plan for that than find out with the truck already in the lane.

Street pickups on the busier routes

Some East Vancouver vehicles sit on arterial streets rather than quiet blocks. Hastings, Kingsway, Victoria Drive, Nanaimo Street, Renfrew Street and Commercial Drive all carry steady traffic, and several have parking restrictions at certain hours or separated bike lanes between the curb and the traffic lane.

That does not stop the pickup. It does mean the loading window is narrower and the approach has to be planned, so tell me which street the car is on and what is immediately around it.

Repair shops and property owners

A good share of East Vancouver calls come from repair shops with a vehicle a customer never came back for, and from property owners with something left behind on their lot. Those removals are usually straightforward mechanically. The part that needs sorting first is authority to release the vehicle, so raise it on the first phone call rather than on pickup day.

What the vehicle is worth

There is no single price for a junk car. The quote comes from the year, make and model, what is wrong with it, whether the vehicle is complete, whether major parts such as the engine, transmission, wheels and catalytic converter are still on it, whether it rolls and steers, whether the keys are available, and what the removal itself takes.

Two cars of the same year and model can be quoted differently. One that is complete, rolls and has its catalytic converter still fitted is not the same job, or the same value, as one that has been parted out in a side yard for three years. If parts have already been sold off, tell me. It changes the number, and I would rather know before I quote.

The details that matter most in East Vancouver are how wide the lane is, whether anything is parked in front of or behind the car, whether a fence, carport or low branches limit the height, and whether the ground is paved, gravel or grass.
