Repair or remove

There is no fixed rule about when a repair stops making sense, but there are useful questions. What is the estimate. What is the vehicle worth running, in its actual condition. What else is close to needing attention: tires, brakes, timing belt, suspension, exhaust. How long you intended to keep it anyway.

A large bill on a sound car you planned to drive for years is often worth paying. The same bill on a car with rust, worn suspension and another repair waiting behind it usually is not. If you are unsure, call and read the numbers out.

Vehicles sitting at repair shops

Central Vancouver has a lot of independent shops, and vehicles do get left at them. Sometimes the owner decided against the repair, sometimes they never came back at all.

Mechanically these are easy pickups: the car is usually accessible, often on a lot or a pad. The part to settle first is who has the authority to release the vehicle. Sort that out on the phone and the removal itself is short.

Street access on the main corridors

Main Street, Broadway, Cambie Street, Oak Street and Granville Street all carry heavy traffic with parking rules that change through the day, and some blocks have separated bike lanes between the curb and the traffic lane.

If your vehicle is parked on one of those, tell me. It usually means loading in a specific window rather than whenever the truck is nearby. A car on a quiet residential block off Main or in a lane behind it is a much more flexible booking.

Mixed housing, mixed parking

This part of the city runs from older houses with lanes to newer low-rise buildings with residential parking, sometimes on the same block. That is why I ask where the vehicle is rather than assuming from the address.

Street level, a private driveway, a lane, a shop lot and a building's resident parking are five different jobs. Tell me which one it is and whether there is any height restriction over the vehicle.

What the vehicle is worth

There is no single price for a junk car. The quote comes from the year, make and model, what is wrong with it, whether the vehicle is complete, whether major parts such as the engine, transmission, wheels and catalytic converter are still on it, whether it rolls and steers, whether the keys are available, and what the removal itself takes.

When a car is being removed because of a large repair bill, the failed component matters less than people expect. A blown engine or a failed transmission is part of the picture, but so is whether the rest of the vehicle is complete and what the make and model are actually worth.

Tell me whether the vehicle is on the street, in a lane, in a driveway, on a shop lot or in a building's parking, and which street or intersection it is nearest.

If it is on a main corridor, mention the parking restrictions and whether there is a bike lane at the curb. If it is in a building or under any kind of roof, I need the height before anything is booked.
